It took some months and a few sleepless nights to make the final decision to go ahead with The Carinya Garglen sale. The biggest decision for all of us was potentially moving away from the Rockhampton Brahman Week Sale, a sale our families have been involved in over the generations since its inception, when Brahman bulls were sold as ¾, 7/8 or purebreds. But times have changed. Progress since then has been phenomenal and this is now a very fast-moving industry that requires so much more input from us, as breeders, to satisfy our clients requirements. At Carinya and Garglen, we are moving with the times and embracing the genetics and technology available to continually produce what our industry and clients demand. We want to produce Brahmans that will prove profitable to everyone and in all aspects of the industry.
With such big investments made to produce better bulls, we required a secure place to market those better bulls. As the two families are striving to breed a similar type, and have shared genetics, it was simply a ‘given’ that we combine forces and present these bulls to you, the producer, on one day, in one place, at just one sale.
With the 5th generation of Brahman Breeders in our families now coming on as very young Brahman enthusiasts, how can we not encourage them to continue within this great breed? It did not take much encouragement and in hindsight, it may have been the other way around. Carinya, Carinya M, Carinya J, Carinya L, Carinya B, Garglen, Garglen M & J and Garglen BR range from stud number 63, registered in 1962 to stud number 5946, registered in 2022. You would have to agree that is very impressive and is a true measure of our families’ dedication to the Brahman breed.
Being a seedstock producer is no easy task. It is expensive, time consuming and mind numbing at times. We eat, sleep and breathe it 24/7, in the quest to fulfil industry requirements for both our stud and commercial clientele. But we love and thrive on the continual challenge and know that the cattle we are producing can be game changers in the Brahman Industry.
Carinya and Garglen are both unwavering on what we expect from our breeding herds. In our females, we breed for moderate frame, structural correctness, long and wide-bodied females, with exceptional udders and an impressive production record. We love to see the balance between type and performance and robustly adhere to selection for our breeder herd. And it has paid off. We have herds of very productive Brahman females that are uniform in type and consistent in productivity.
We also focus on growth and think this is a just a roll-on effect from producing the correct females, as they are 50% responsible for reproducing an animal that will fulfil market requirements from 200 to 600-day growth and still be valuable herself at the end of the day. We use sires that can reproduce themselves, having sound structure, impressive growth patterns and that will breed progeny with the ability to perform in any situation i.e. Grass or grain fed. It is how quickly and efficiently that we can produce the targeted product, that is the biggest profit driver. Clients will seek different growth patterns in sires when considering their individual operations, but we are comfortable that our commercial producer focus most strongly influences our stud breeding programs and will cover all market bases.
As seedstock producers there is more to it than that, but we know we have the ever-important basics right, so we can then add on the phenotypically attractive traits that we all seek. Great heads, tidy underlines, acceptable scrotal measurements and of course temperament all come in to play among many other traits.
Both studs have introduced some very exciting genetics from within Australia and the great Brahman herds of the USA. The results of these crosses are very satisfying to us, and we will present the resultant progeny to you at The Carinya Garglen Sale.
Please consider this an invitation to join us at the Glenlands Sale Complex, 53164 Burnett Highway, Bouldercombe, on Tuesday 29th October. Should you wish to inspect the bulls prior to the sale, please contact either vendors or agents to make arrangements. And remember, if you need any further information, we are only a phone call away.
We wish to make a special mention and thank you to Mrs. Val Childs and the Childs family for allowing use of the Glenlands venue.
